Some thought AZ Governor Jan Brewer was stepping on a land mine when she signed AZ immigration law. But, some think she's crazy like a fox.
The way the story played out, it was little Jan Brewer defending her state against the rest of the country, against the Justice Department, and against the big bad wolf, President Barack Obama himself.
Most people know the whole story. Brewer came into the national spotlight when, on April 23, 2010, she signed the controversial Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act. The act makes it a state misdemeanor crime for an alien to be in Arizona without carrying registration documents required by federal law, authorizes state and local law enforcement of federal immigration laws, and cracks down on those sheltering, hiring and transporting illegal aliens. Brewer is seeking a full term as Governor of Arizona in the 2010 Arizona gubernatorial election.
But, few outside AZ knew or cared that before little Jan signed the immigration legislation, her political future was bleak. Now, she has a new lease on life and a bunch of new supporters.
Some ask was if this was the strategy all along or did little Jan just fall into a situation that worked in her favor. Who knows, but Little Jan went from a little fish in a big pond to hanging with the big boys, all with the stroke of a pen.
